The Funnel of ship Funnel of a ship is usually located at aft of the ship. It can be located at amidships and fore ship. This depends upon on what type of ship it is and from where the exhaust pipe lines are drawn out from ship. The information located below can be treated for tanker ships. Ship funnel play a vital role, the lighter gases (warm gases of engine room) travels up and exhausted by grills at funnel. It is also a survey job to check the flap opening and closing at the back of funnel. The exhaust of Main Engine, Generators, Boilers, incinerator and safety Valve safely uptake from funnel. The material used for the construction of this is mild steel. Four to six pipelines are present there. The one which have large diameter is the exhaust of main engine. Three to four pipeline present for the auxiliary engine (generator). Two uptakes present for the exhaust of port and starboard boiler. Two smaller diameter pipelines present for the safety valve of port and starboard boiler. Some of the vents are also located at the funnel grills position (Lubricating oil, Fuel oil). On the exhaust pipeline there present is a spark arrestor (Flame Arrestor). The function of the spark arrestor is to limit the un-burnt carbon in the exhaust. Spark arrestor is used for safety purpose. In case it is not present or damage un burnt carbon may fall on the main deck could cause fire. Lagging is also done on exhaust so that maximum heat remains in pipe and don’t radiate in ambient atmosphere. One main thing I forget to explain is the gong (Pneumatic whistle) located on the front of the funnel. The logo of the company is also painted on the funnel of the ship.
